Soup culture: why a meal may need something warm and liquid

A meal may have enough dishes and still feel missing if there is no soup. That feeling tells us that Chinese food logic is not only about calories or courses.

Warmth that moves through the meal

Soup softens the meal. It can connect dry rice, rich dishes, vegetables, and conversation into one rhythm.

In southern Chinese homes especially, soup can also carry ideas of season, family effort, and care for elders or children.
